The refugee claim process in Canada is designed to identify and provide protection to individuals who have fled their home countries due to well-founded fears of persecution based on factors such as race, religion, nationality, political opinion, or membership in a particular social group.
Asylum seekers arrive in Canada through various means, including airports, land borders, or by crossing irregularly. Upon arrival, individuals can make a refugee claim by approaching a port of entry or an Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) office. Once an asylum claim is submitted, the individual undergoes an eligibility determination process to determine whether their claim falls under the Refugee and Humanitarian Resettlement Program.
If the claim is found eligible, the asylum seeker is scheduled for a Refugee Protection Division (RPD) hearing.
